“Algae: Mining Wastewater for Nutrients, Fuel, and Fertilizer”

Holiday Inn Research Center, 5903 University Dr. Huntsville, Alabama

March 26, 2010

This information-packed workshop explores how to minimize algae production’s fresh water and nutrient footprints by recycling wastewater streams while at the same time producing a host of valuable algal end products. In addition, we will learn of algae’s tremendous potential as a cost-effective bioremediation tool for wastewater streams, effecting a more stable and healthy ecosystem.

 Who Should Attend

Algal researchers and companies, investors, water treatment consultants, municipalities, water treatment companies, agricultural leaders, farmers, municipal wastewater handlers, industrial wastewater producers and engineers for meat and poultry, pulp and paper, textiles, dyes and pigments, food and dairy, starch and cellulose, pesticides and insecticides, metal finishers, and chemical and drug formulators.

 Topics of discussion:

The economics of wastewater streams and effects on our environment

Win/win potential for algae-based wastewater bioremediation

Making algae production/bioremediation a double income stream

Identifying roadblocks to mass scale algae production using wastewater

Matching wastewater streams with appropriate algal strains and systems

Examining potential for feed, fuel and fertilizer end products

Optimizing open pond and closed loop algae/wastewater systems

Nexus would like to offer their thoughts and prayers to the family of the victims in the UAHuntsville shooting tragedy Friday, February 12.  One of the victims, Dr. Gopi Podila was an avid supporter of the Nexus Energy Center and his contributions will be truly missed.

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, the Nexus Energy Center will be a consortium of talented partners dedicated to bringing energy solutions to the United States. The guiding principal for the Center will be to foster networking for local businesses, universities, entrepreneurs and the community who are dedicated to new energy strategies for America.  The Center will strive to promote and facilitate a balance of analysis and creativity while focusing on the conservation, generation, storage, and transmission of energy.

The Need for Energy Solutions

America consumes almost 21% of the world’s energy but only makes up 4.5% of the population.  One of the greatest threats to the United States is its voracious appetite for energy and growth, which is having disastrous effects on our economy and the Environment.  Serious advancements in clean and alternative energy sources will help the U.S. play a leading role in solving the planet’s energy issues.  Additionally, it will give a chance for the U.S. to have a secure and growing economy.

Fossil Fuels, such as petroleum, natural gas, and coal, make up more than 83% of our current energy sources.  In the transportation sector, 95% of the energy comes from petroleum and only a mere 3% from renewable fuel.  In the power demand sector, 51% of power is generated from coal.  These statistics are proof of a dependency on finite sources of energy and a need to discover new methods for powering our lives.
